  2. Interesting weekend. Stepped a little further out of my self-imposed closet(prison cell) and attended a small PRIDE block party in a downtown section of the city in which I live. Went at the invitation of my younger gay neighbor friends and their adopted daughter. To say I was enlightened and amazed would be an understatement. So many people of all ages, so much color, so much expression of joy. A small stage with a DJ providing music, people were dancing and singing, my friends' 2 1/2 year old daughter unafraid and dancing her tiny hiney off with a guy in a fox costume. A fashion show followed and then performances from some of the drag queens from the area. I made my way under a little tree for shade, forgetting to take a hat on the sunny day. As the queens lip-synced their songs, people offered a dollar or two for the performance. Stepping still further out of my comfort zone, I was taken aback by a beautiful black songstress and offered her my contribution, dancing with her for a few seconds and then embracing her to say thanks for the opportunity to be me. I'm 75 but still have the rhythm in me and can boogie with the best of them.
Under the tree, I met a younger couple up from San Diego(I live in Washington) and they commented on my vintage Adidas rainbow colored shoes I was wearing. As we talked, the father admitted he had been marginalized and typed as gay for his smaller stature and feminine demeanor most of his life. He was there to support those who may have had similar experiences. His wife was monitoring a young girl who was busy drawing a PRIDE flag with chalk on the sidewalk. I asked if she was their daughter and the Dad said that HE was their son and he chooses to look his way. It was the waist-length hair that confused me, but he did appear as a striking young child with the freedom to express himself in his own way.
We said our good-byes, they headed in one direction, I with my friends to the waterfront area for dinner. I doubt I'll ever see this remarkable family again, but meeting them has left me with this thought...EACH CONVERSATION IS AN INVITATION TO LEARN. Don't be afraid to engage in small talk or deep subject matter with complete strangers. I realize that the venue was a very safe place for me to do this, but people will either accept or reject your verbal inquires. I've so much to learn from people and some of them are amazing. Oh, and the Dad saw someone wearing a kilt and said he wanted a red kilt. I encouraged him to make the purchase if it would make him as happy as my rainbow shoes do for me. Minutes later he showed me a picture of a red kilt on his cellphone and purchased it. Somewhere in San Diego a fine young man will be smiling and proud

  5. Even before I was old enough to figure out the kind of man I was, I'd see Liberace on TV (my mother LOVED him, btw) & think, "There something about him...."

  6. Yeah, the Lib was so blatantly out there nobody gave a shit. His fan base was mostly women and gays and a few husbands their wives dragged to his shows. He was a consummate entertainer who gave the crowds what they wanted to see: an overly ornate stage, a glitzy piano, a candelabra and a running chit-chat through the musical numbers. And besides all that, you don't mess with a man who had the balls to dress like that. He's a fucking maniac!!!

  7. @ Anonymous - His live shows were pretty awesome. Flamboyant and entertaining from the minute he stepped (or drove) on the stage.
