What a great post, Rick! Interesting notice to read, too. (Yes, I read it all.)

Yes! If you ever see a sailor wandering into a gay bar stop and offer assistance; he may be lost.

I always had a crush on sailors.

My uncle Roland was in the Canadian Navy and I could kiss him anytime but back in those times, being gay wasn't ok.

He has that cute ancre tattoo on his muscled for arm and most of all his «Bruce Willis» kind of face very manly.

During my naval service in the 70s, back before "Don't ask, don't tell" and private acts of a sexual nature was permissible, I would have relished being treated like a sex toy. That PSA is such wonderful satire, filled with stereotypical thinking about sailors and sex. The gay motorcycle gang chaining the muscled seafarer to a wall and taking turns licking his nipples had me bent over in convulsions, or was I just looking for an opportunity to join in the fun? Those swabbies in and out of uniform, the front panel of their bell bottoms unbuttoned and exposing their "torpedoes," or wearing just a hat and boots is classic gay iconography. Men of the World's Navies, I salute you and thank you for your "service."

Don't forget that it was the US Navy that inadvertently made San Francisco the gay mecca that it became. For yrs sailors who were being kicked out of the navy for any type of gay activity on ships at sea were dumped in SF with a dishonorable discharge. Too embarrassed to go back to small towns and face their families, they stayed in SF and made a new life for themselves.

Anonymous, I believe it was not only that but the fact that San Francisco was the discharge port for the Pacific fleet at large. Many of the soldiers who had established amorous relationships during the war chose to stay in San Francisco rather than to return home to the farms. Yes. There is that to be thankful for.
