I found out years, even decades ago, that if you went to a particular eating place, to tip well (over the minimum percentage, back then). The wait staff would notice and give you better service in the future. First at Bennigan's, then later at other places, even Waffle House. Now, if you get poor service and might not go back, then the minimum can suffice.
ReplyDeleteI used to go to one of Gene Street's middle-class restaurants in Dallas, every so often. It was a good place, had some great salads and chicks, and was near the gayborhood. Had some excellent servers, both in looks and job performance. As I had the money back then, I would usually tip $20.00 on a $15.00 meal. He questioned the first time, I agreed it was what I wanted to do. He didn't ask again. The next times, it was obvious I was getting "priority service". A month or so later, I went in and I could see the other waiters looking in my direction and talking. The new guy came over, treated me well, and he got a $20.00 tip, too. He was excited. You CAN get good service if YOU want it. BUT you have to be friendly and appreciative of their service, too. An a-hole that tips well is still an a-hole.
Please substitute "chicken" for "chicks", above. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteCdadbr - Unfortunately, I cannot edit anyone's comment. However, I knew what you meant. To your main comment: They work hard for the money. It's not something I could do.
ReplyDeleteIn Province of Quebec we are so in shortage of teachers (and the pay is very good) that we need to hire non qualify people to get infront of classes.
ReplyDeleteWe have 80 000 qualified teachers and 30 000 non qualified ones.
Still we are missing teachers to get the jobs.
Two reasons are: 1. many are retireing 2. many young teachers quiting after 2 to 5 years in the system. Kids are being more and more difficult to mangage and teaching is more like being a sheep in a tiger's cage.
I waited tables in universtiy. It was great for the flexibility. I had my own customers. I totally enjoyed them and the work. A good tip was 15%. Why did it go up to 19%, then 20%?
ReplyDeleteThe prices went up, so why did the tip?
Personally, I prefer the European approach. Pay the employees well and include everything in the price.
If I tip the waiter, why should they split the tip with anyone else? Why shold I be subsidizing their labor?
