Najin and Fatu
(The men are their caretakers.)
There are only two northern white rhinos left in the world. And both of them are females, Najin and her daughter Fatu. Sadly, the last male, Sudan, died in 2018. Today, the northern white rhino is a functionally extinct species. They are currently living in the Ol Pejeta wildlife conservancy in Kenya where they are heavily guarded against poachers.
It's a scenario we have seen many times before, from the Javan tiger to the Mauritius dodo. Due to hunting and loss of natural habitat, animal species cannot survive on a planet ruled by humans. The most intelligent animal on Earth is causing the most irrational history of extinction.
I have read about them numerous times. Such a sad commentary. And one that sadly I suspect won't be the last. That's why I donate money to the seldwick trust that's located in Kenya as an elephant Preserve who raised elephants that are orphaned. They're amazing Foundation. They also have rhinos I'm a couple of other species they take in that are getting injured. They're one of the sanctuaries single-handedly bringing back the elephant species in Kenya. I hope one day to go volunteer with them or at least go visit.
ReplyDeleteHumans have managed to fuck things up very nicely, haven't we? I read about these rhinos and just felt terribly sad. And ashamed.
ReplyDeleteMaddie - Kudos to you my friend.
ReplyDeleteBig Dude - I agree.
