Unless you're a devoted cinephile, few people under 40 will recognize this beautiful woman. She was one of Italy's gifts to world cinema and left an indelible mark in Hollywood as a photogenic and competent comedic actor. A gorgeous woman, impeccably dressed and coifed well into her later years. Thank you Miss Lollobrigida and thank you Italy for sharing her with the world.
ReplyDeleteLoved her!!

ReplyDeleteI'm with Milleson, what a beautiful women/actress. I know, especially my Dad and also my Mom, always thought so. She seemed to be a household name, with many of families that I knew of. If you said the name Gina, must likely the last name was going to come up and be talked about in a very nice way. Miss Lollobrigida may you RIP.
Wonderful job Rick.
Bellissima!
ReplyDeleteA beautiful and classy woman.
ReplyDeleteRemember seeing her in the 50s with Messrs Lancaster and Curtis in TRAPEZE.
ReplyDeleteShe also worked her way into pop culture. I remember a Bugs Bunny cartoon in which he got into trouble in Venice in a gondola and at point smashed face-first into a bridge beneath a sign reading "Lolobrigida".
ReplyDeleteI have always found to be dumb the people saying "oh yes, but Sophia Loren is so much more... (la-di-dah)"
ReplyDeleteThey were bot remarkable in my opinion, except Gina Lollobrigida always managed for both women and men to remain more relatable, therefore more accessible.
A sad news indeed, but all the more reason to watch again let's say 'Trapeze', as Anon mentioned :-)
Meeting her in the 1950s at the White House, Eisenhower said: I see a prosperous Italy!
ReplyDeletehere a video in Italian about this meeting.
She had a lesser known gift for photography and published a couple of well-received books of photographs in her day. She was so wildly popular in Italy that, in order to get these shots, she had to wear an ugly wig plus padding and put peach pits in her cheeks in order to completely disguise herself. And still she got recognized.
ReplyDeleteIt was the weirdest thing - I had a dream about her on Monday morning, just before I woke up. It was a dream about the time she guested on Falcon Crest as Jane Wyman's long-lost half-sister (I think) and how silly that whole thing was and I even woke up thinking, "Now what would I be dreaming about THAT?!" Then I logged on and discovered that she'd died. You could have knocked me over with a feather!
RIP Lovely Gina.
Jimbo - Very interesting.
