(These maps will embiggen muchly.)

It's an interesting read, with links to more interesting stuff.

Interesting stuff. It's worth noting that the more spread-out nature of US cities, noted in the linked article, is mostly due to the fact that the US was the first place where personal car ownership became commonplace. When most people have cars, it's possible to live far out from the city center and still be able to reach it easily. In the UK, as car ownership has become similarly common over the last few decades, suburban sprawl has also increased -- not as much as in the US, but since Britain has a much higher density (one-fifth of the US's population but only one-fortieth as much land), the metro areas now cover an appreciable fraction of the territory. As car ownership becomes more common all over the world, suburban sprawl will probably follow.

Indonesia has been called the Javanese empire, which is perhaps a more realistic term for it. Many people on the low-density outer islands greatly resent Javanese colonization of their territory (to reduce population pressure on Java itself), but there's not much they can do about it.

Fascinating. I was aware of Indonesia's situation...some years back, Javanese settlers were massacred some years back by Ibans, Borneo's headhunters.
