If you have the time, this is a very interesting article from "Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists". It has several neat graphics, one of which is interactive. Of course, it's thoroughly depressing...
Nowhere to hide
How a nuclear war would kill you — and almost everyone else.
We live tight smack in the middle of two targets. There literally would be nowhere to hide. Which is why I've told my wife, "If they hit either one, run INTO the blast. It'll be quicker and less painful."
ReplyDeletePat - That's actually a good idea.
ReplyDeleteWell, that certainly was a cheery start to the day, wasn't it? Luckily we live within the possible blast zone of a major air force base, so it will at least be quick. I can't imagine anything more horrific than SURVIVING a nuclear exchange.
ReplyDeleteAnd Putin is threatening to use these things if he doesn't get his way.
ReplyDeleteBig Dude - The world is getting scarier and scarier.
ReplyDeleteMark - Me neither!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with whkattk above. I have always said the very best position to be in during a Nuclear Exchange is one where you look up and say "What is that light?" seconds before you are evaporated. To heck with surviving. No quality of life.
ReplyDeleteFunny thing happened to Hubby and I several years back. We were driving to Savanah, GA from Charleston SC, when I looked up and saw two large missiles erratically corkscrewing down to earth from far above. I actually turned to Chuck and said, "This may be goodbye my love!" Pointing at the missiles. Well, they continued and fell into the ocean. No explosion, mass death or issues. Turns out the were the Solid Rocket Boosters to a Space Shuttle launch that had just happened. Radio confirmed it seconds after we saw it from the side of the road, where we had pulled off to meet our DOOM! We got back on the road after checking our clothing, and continued with our day.
Crazy world we live in. Everyone stay peaceful, please!!
Fred - I love that story! Thanks for sharing it.
