Republicans Plan to Use Debt Limit Leverage to Cut Social Security and Medicare
. . . Republicans in the House are planning to use a potential showdown next year over raising the federal debt limit to make changes in Social Security and Medicare, Bloomberg’s Jack Fitzpatrick reports.
The developing plan hinges on Republicans winning control of the House in the midterm elections, an outcome that is looking likely. Four GOP lawmakers who are vying for leadership of the House Budget Committee in the event of a Republican victory told Fitzpatrick, the need to raise the debt ceiling could give them the leverage they need to force Democrats to make concessions.
. . . Although the details are still up in the air, one theme is clear: House Republicans want to reduce federal spending, and the major entitlement programs are a target. Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) Carter said that Republicans’ “main focus has got to be on nondiscretionary — it’s got to be on entitlements.”
. . . As House Republican leaders’ own words constantly reveal, dismantling the pillars of American seniors’ financial security is not a fringe view in the extreme MAGA House GOP. It is a broadly held obsession at the core of their legislative agenda.

VOTE like your future depends on it, because it does!
I love that Republicans want to cut everything. How do they expect the middle class and poor to even live? Oh that's right they don't. It's pretty much what England's going through right now with their new prime minister. She's going over like a fart in church. I suspect she's going to have a very short-term.

ReplyDeleteLove Rick's wisdom!
Maddie - The world is run by too many assholes.
ReplyDeleteThey will go after any program they feel is "entitlement," regardless of the fact that we and our employers supply that money. The Dems need to shout this loud and clear - with PROOF - because there are plenty of retired Republicans collecting SSI.
ReplyDeleteIn USA the word «Liberals» has such a negative reputation for those Repugs that they are aiming on it to scared many Americans.
ReplyDeleteFor us Canadians, Democrats «liberals» would be good members of our Conservatie party (CCP) in Ottawa. So the Repugs are more like the Christian anti abotion and racist part of our Conservative Party of the Alberta province members. Alberta is more like Texas or Florida.
The most important for your democracy is to vote BLUE and try to check on the gerrymandering of the RED states.
I voted early here in Maryland last week (blue all the way).
ReplyDeletePat - The louder the better!
ReplyDeleteJiEL - Absolutely!
ReplyDeleteGF - Good! When our mail-in ballots arrive, I'm gonna vote blue no matter who.
ReplyDeleteFor what it's worth I like what this article from salon.com reported:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.salon.com/2022/10/10/michael-moore-predicts-democrats-will-win-big-in-the-midterms-will-he-be-right-again/
(via Jobsanger's), about what Michael Moore thinks about the November election.
Maybe because it just reflects what I hope for you my American friends.
But also maybe because Moore proved on several occasions he knows better about reflecting upon important society matters than most of the mainstream media.
Laurent - Thanks for the link, it was an interesting article. I sure hope he's right!
ReplyDeleteJiEL, I live in Alberta, don't paint us all with one brush!!!!!!
ReplyDelete@Unknown 7:29,
ReplyDeleteMy comment did paint large, I know, but you must admit that the majority of far right conservatives are in provinces like yours. Sure there are some more liberal people in Alberta but it's rare to hear their voices.
P. Poilièvre the new Conservative Party leader is an example of the far right taking on that party.
Like you, English speaking people from outside Québec province are painting us as seperatists and wanting to leave the Canadian country.
More now and since the mid 90's the separatist option is very low as it's now under 30% of our population.
I get so tired and upset about hearing that Social Security is an "entitlement." We PAY into that system. There's no choice in the matter. We also have had no voice in where that money goes or what the government has done with it (some of it isn't coming back to those who paid into it). When the system began the complaint was that it was "socialism" and now it's being attacked for paying out funds to those who participate. Those wanting to end health care and retirement payments are wealthy and have no concept of the struggles of those in need or the elderly who often have spent their lives in gainful employment (all the while paying into the "system"). I want to curse.
ReplyDeleteTaurus9311 - I totally agree! And, I would rather "put a curse" on so many of those bastards.
