Rick, so very nice of you to honor this lovely woman in this pictorial tribute. As an actor, she almost accomplished the impossible---overshadowing Cher in "Moonstruck". As a woman starting her career so late in life, she certainly made up for lost time with a string of memorable character roles in many movies. I remember seeing "Steel Magnolias" the first time. Her Southern accent had me howling with laughter. I don't remember with whom I saw that movie, a mixed crowd I think, but when she bought the local radio station and went into the locker room to provide some "color analysis" I remember getting a woody. Well who wouldn't with all those high school football jocks running around with their buns exposed, lots of boy buns. And the expression on Shirley Maclaine's face is priceless! Olympia made a foray into LGBTQ+ territory in the 2011 movie "Cloudburst" with Brenda Fricker, about a Lesbian couple on a road trip. Definitely gifted in her versatility and a "one of a kind" woman. She will be missed by many.
It is weird, you just assume hat some people would live forever. I first noticed Olympia Dukakis as Mrs Madrigal in the Miniseries in 1993. On the other hand, that is 30 years ago. Boy, is time flying when you're having fun.
I did, too. One of my faves. She always brought her A game. Loved her in Moonstruck... she grounded that pic. Gave it a weight it sorely needed. "If you can't say anything nice... come sit next to me!" is my youngest sister's favorite movie quote from Steel. And Tales of the City will always be one of the things that got me through a very miserable winter in Iowa (a terrible state). I will miss her.

ReplyDeleteA fabulous gem and an advocate for LGBT. She is a beacon of talent, and an inspiration that fame can come at any age!
ReplyDeleteLoved Olympia Dukakis. A rare talent. Droll. Joyed with and by life. A communicator of love and acceptance.
