Caproni Ca.60 Noviplano

The CA 60 Noviplano was built in the 1920s by Caproni with the intended purpose of ferrying 100 passengers over the Atlantic. To get there, the plane was equipped with three sets of three wings, altogether nine, and eight engines.

Unfortunately, the awkward, sprawling design wasn’t able to get anywhere close to the Atlantic on either of its two flights. On the second flight, it climbed up 60 feet before it crashed straight into Italy’s Lake Maggiori, at which point it burst into flames before the wreckage was salvaged.

  1. Nice post.
I'm a all time fan of aviation and I didn't know that one.

So many attempts in those years in the beginning of the 20th century to fly and do the best to take many passengers abord.

100 years more or less and we have planes like the A-380 that can fly around the world with 400 passengers.

  2. I guess this would be why Italy has no air force? Do they? Oh... I have to google that. The Italian Air Force is the air force of the Italian Republic. The Italian Air Force was founded as an independent service arm on 28 March 1923 by King Victor Emmanuel III as the Regia Aeronautica. After World War II, when Italy was made a republic by referendum, the Regia Aeronautica was given its current name. Hmmm... the more you know.

I live not far from there! Taliedo means a place full of lime trees. (the linden tree is tilietum in Latin)

  7. this area was heavily bombed during the Second World War by the Allies! Until April 25, 1945, Northern Italy was under the Republic of Salò.
