Actually the saying is by Karl Marx "Religion is the opium of the masses." It is sometimes translated as "opiate of the masses." The quotation originates from the introduction of Marx's work A Contribution to the Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right, which he started in 1843 but which was not published until after his death.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Rick. Love the Nietzsche meme. I love this life... this world... even with all the terrible crap happening. And have long believed that had I not been spoon-fed religion as a youngster, I wouldn't have issues with magical thinking as an adult. Also, my sense of blame, shame and anger would have all turned out differently.
