Rewriting the limits of presidential powers

The power of the president is enormous – and this president is not bashful in describing powers that go well beyond simple declarations.

In April, when discussing guidelines to be issued to governors about reopening states during the coronavirus pandemic, President Donald Trump said, "When somebody is the President of the United States, the authority is total, and that's the way it's got to be – it's total."

There are, it's true, some restraints on most presidential authority, but those might not apply to all the president's powers.

As Mr. Trump stated in March, "I have the right to do a lot of things that people don't even know about."

  1. I saw this on morning news. Scary that we as a nation have allowed a person so morally bankruptcy 5o obtain the highest office we possess.

  2. I have to say, this hits close to home. The Republican held Senate, here in Minnesota keep trying to take away the executive emergency powers of Gov. Walz, because small business owners and rural folk are mad about having to wear masks and social distance. They want their meat raffles and to be able to belly up to the bar with their pals. Virus be damned. I hope it never happens. Even if it does, it will go before the Minnesota Supreme court and be over-turned. Science has to win some time, don't you think? Common sense? Sigh.

  4. uptonking - Common sense? What's that? Even during the flu of 1918 people resisted wearing masks for all the various reasons we hear today.
