Division Street & 28th Avenue

Portland is going through a tremendous building phase of apartment housing. Most are being constructed along so-called transportation corridors: Those streets and avenues that have a bus or light-rail line, that way they are not required to provide parking as long as there are fewer than 30 units. (Which is a HUGE gripe of mine.) The lower floor is usually for retail. They are mostly large and boxy in appearance and aestheticly don't fit the surrounding neighborhood. But that's what change is, right?

Anyway, yesterday I ran across this proposal for a ten-unit condominium, complete with underground parking as well as a small restaurant in the corner of the lower floor. Besides being much more attractive than the boxy buildings is the interesting fact that this structure is for one large extended family, designed for them to age in place. There's one or two small units in the back of the lower floor for on-site care attendants.

  1. I like the look of this. As a New Yorker I would be afraid to live in this because it looks like a huge security risk.
