I actually had one of these for a while before I figured out what it was. It was gifted to me by a friend and I awkwardly used it as a little sugar bowl. I later discovered it is actually an egg coddler, which is sort of an egg poacher. When poaching an egg, the egg is cooked directly in the liquid; but when coddling an egg, it is cooked in one of these.
Egg coddler? Cool. I was going to say it looked like some pop up toothpick dispenser they would have on tables at diners I remember back when I was a kid hanging and grandma and grandpas diner.
