  1. This incident still resonates through humanity....a 'lesson' more ways than one can imagine....the display of the vile British class structure at is worst and yet tales of heroism, selflessness and stoicism....I have the very same image of the Titanic leaving Southampton on my bedroom wall....it reminds me on awakening every morning to treasure every moment of life....those people on the decks that 10th April didn't know they only had 5 days of life remaining and the desperate fate that awaited some of them...! Makes you think eh?

  3. bobbers - The Titanic tragedy totally fascinates me.

Gawd must have had today off as well to let that shrine of his burn like that.

  4. Hi...
Seeing the image of the 'Olympic' posted here....reminds one of how fate can be different....of the three liners, the 'Titanic's' sister, 'Olympic' lasted until 1935 when after a distinguished career, serving as a troopship in WW1 followed by many crossing of the Atlantic....finally was broken up as 'fodder' for the unemployed in Jarrow, England to work on for wages...the poor third sister 'Britannic' used as a Hospital Ship in WW1 but lost to a naval mine in November 1916.....

  5. bobbers - I'm afraid my ignorance is showing: I thought all these were pictures of the Titanic. Which ones are the Olympic?

  6. Hi.
It would be the 7th image....(bottom left of the group of four smaller images if you zoom in she's the Olympic) not a problem at all, all splendid and atmospheric images....lovely and classic liner designs...unlike the 'block of flats' style we see today eh?

  7. bobbers - Thanks for the clarification. I still don't see any difference. (Sorry for spelling your name wrong on the last question.)

  8. Hi....
The only way I have ever visually managed to tell the two earlier ships apart is that on the Titanic (the second of the three sister ships) the forward section of the promenade deck is enclosed, (although with slide opening windows) whilst on the Olympic (the older of the three 'sisters') if you notice it is completely 'open'..... other than that they are superficially similar...Britannic had and enclosed prom but many more lifeboats from the outset as she was under construction and altered due to Titanic's loss.....

Never worry about the name.... as my grandpa always said..'Never mind what people call you....as long as they don't call you late for your supper'!

Best wishes....been great exchanging thoughts on these fine liners...

  9. bobbert - Thanks so much for the explanation! I see the difference now. (BTW, on this reply I noticed that auto-correct put your name with an "s", this time I caught it.)

  10. Cheers....
These ships and their individual histories, are fascinating for sure....interesting to see that in later images of 'Olympic' after her refit, her boat deck is crammed with lifeboats!
    All the best
