amazing he could dodge so much...its always the rich who manage to get out of things, isnt it.
ReplyDeleteHere in England we had something similar back in the 1950s and early to mid 1960s called National Service. All men between 19 and 25 had to sign up for a stint in the army. You had a get-out clause; three months. If you didnt like it, you only had to do your mandatory three months and you could quit [but back then it was severely frowned upon - it was considered your national duty to stay on] but if you didnt, you found yourself signed up for...FOUR YEARS! And you couldnt get out of it either, unless you had all your limbs missing or you were dead - and even then they wouldnt let you leave! Many men couldnt find work after they decided to drop out cause it was considered shameful on their work record.
I was only a child when N.S, was abolished so cant imagine what it mustve been like [tho I try!] and Ive made up for it since!
In a way its a pity there still isnt some form of 'draft' for politicians. They mightnt be so eager to send others to war if they had to serve army time themselves.
Karl - You're a well of information, and right, too. Good luck with the house search.
