Marina City, Chicago

A stunt car drives off the parking garage at Marina City during the filming of "Hunter," starring Steve McQueen on Sept. 21, 1979, in Chicago. The car crashed into the Chicago River below. It was McQueen's last movie before his death in 1980. (Val Mazzenga / Chicago Tribune)

  1. I remember seeing this movie sometime in the 1980's.. it had to have been on television, as I know I didn't see it in the theaters. Kudos to the stuntman who took a car off the 18th floor of a parking garage! But... the movie on the whole was just so-so - nothing to write home about and by this time Steve McQueen did look a bit used and old in the part of a bounty hunter in an action-packed film (he was 50 at the time). It was kind of obvious that the producers and directors needed a big name attached to the film and went bargain basement hunting. Don't get me wrong - I loved Steve McQueen in his earlier roles, but by this age he should have been settling down into more sedate roles.

And then there is Marina City... While groundbreaking back in the 1960's in concept of Shop/Live complexes - it's undoubtedly an architectural icon of Chicago and design in general. However, in practice it's not very functional. With every apartment shaped like a pie-wedge and containing no 90-degree angles, traditional market-available furniture is difficult - if not impossible - to find that works well in the spaces. Of course, for what they charge for the apartments you could probably get custom-made furniture that would work but that kind of defeats the objective of the entire design (inexpensive, efficient apartment living). It reminds me of the Octagon houses that were so popular in the 1850's Victorian Era - an imbalance of form (modern, unusual, interesting and efficient) and function (liveable).

  3. I think most movies/series (if not all) taking place or having a scene in Chicago have some action happening with these towers in the background. Foreigners may not recall they're in Chicago, but we all know we've seen them before.
As for Steve McQueen, well.. I think I fell in love with him when I was a teen and watched 'The Thomas Crown affair' on TV'. Fay Dunaway was beautifully stunning, both classy and sharp. Perfectly casting.
But of course I went to bed fantasizing about McQueen...
Thank you for making me remember of that movie. It's going to be next in my download folder.
Have yourselves a wonderful Spring :-)
