ReplyDeleteSo, I don't know much (or really anything) about Larry Dee or Buck Youngblood, but suspect they were strictly print models and/or probably fell into that period before I had a lot of access to histories or knowledge of my own sexuality.
ReplyDeleteAh, but Rod Garetto - that's a whole very large and different kettle of porn! Born in 1966, Rod Garetto spent his entire career swearing he was straight - all to no avail. I guess it's hard for people to believe that you are straight and G4P when you are one of the most prolific gay porn actors of the era (more than 135 individual full theatrical-release films with another 100 or so compilation reels released on top of that!).
Because of his skin tone and appearance, most people thought Rod was of Latin descent and indeed, he was typecast in several movies as the hot Latin lover for several studios. While he may have been of Latin descent somewhere several generations back, Rod was born in the outskirts of Memphis, Tennessee from a family that identified as 100% redneck stock; one of the reasons that he broke from his family and fled to California, eventually (as so many did at that time!) getting into the porn industry. Towards the end of his career in the mid-1990's, he starred in a biographical film called "The Rod Garreto Story" and it's almost painful to watch as he describes a brutal childhood and early teenage years under the control of his parents and siblings.
Starting with the Athletic Model Guild (AMG) in solo scenes, Rod rapidly branched out into full blown gay pornography and was the "everyman" - too thick body-wise to be a twink (although he was loosely identified as having a "swimmers build,"), too slender to be a "hunk" and too young to be classified as a "daddy" at the time, Rod floated somewhere in between types but was enthusiastically up for any kind of scene - from romance to one night stands, gloryhole to full blown leather - Rod was your go-to guy.
Exceptionally well hung and equally adept in masculine dominant roles as well as submissive ones combined with a willingness to cross genres, Rod never (perhaps intentionally) found a "home" studio and worked for almost anyone in production at the time. Because of the lack (or intent) of being locked in long term contracts, he never really advanced to the big studios like Colt or Falcon; however, today he is considered a "Falcon Star" after the company started gobbling up all the smaller studios in the late 90's to early 2000's, gaining his content in the consolidations. He did a lot of work for AMG and All Worlds, Stallion, HIS Video and Filmco, as well as another couple of dozen studios.
Rod's last "action" film was in the mid- to late 1990's after which he quietly retired and pretty much slipped off everyone's radar. I know he did a couple of films in the early 2000's in non-sexual cameo roles (the guy on the street, the store clerk, etc.) but will always be remembered for his amazing work through the 80's and 90's... well, that and his... erm, junk.
