ReplyDelete3- Strait of Gibraltar
ReplyDeleteWas known to the ancient Greeks as The Pillars of Heracles. Famed for the Rock of Gibraltar where the some of the locals speak Llanito, a dialect mix of Spanish, English and Ligurian. The most famous residents are the free roaming Barbary Macaques that inhabit the rock.
And across is Tangier in Morocco, known for its gardens and casbah and once a colony of decadent artists and writers in the 40’s and 50’s. Matisse, Genet, Gide, Burroughs, Capote, Williams, Orton, Vidal, Kerouac and Ginsberg among them, staying at the El Muniria Hotel and lunching at the Cafe de Paris, while some of them indulged in drugs and the local boys.
Today those days are over and a town of 50 000 back then, is now a bustling port home to over 1million !
