The Spruce Goose
Howard Hughes
This plane resides not very far from where Jerry and I live but we've never gone to see it.
Click on link below to read some history of this interesting plane.
I visited the goose about 25 years ago - it was quite an experience - its monster huge and if I remember correctly it's made of plywood as Hughes was looking for an alternative to metal which was in short supply during the war - we also did the Queen Mary tour - another really big building project - I was not prepared for the sheer immensity of either of them -
jsstrand - Immensity is the key word. I, too, visited the Queen Mary and had absolutely no idea how big those ships are. Now they're small compared to some new cruise ships.
The air museum in which the Spruce Goose now sits is definitely worth visiting! I went two years ago on my way to Seattle when I stopped to visit a friend in Salem.
The damn thing actually managed to get airborne!
ReplyDeleteYes but only once in November 3 1947.

ReplyDeleteSuch an insane man. Very sad. I can't believe you've never gone to see it. It's like the Titanic.
