  1. Abominations of the sea, abominations of the land, extreme heat, and extreme cold. Quite a variety.

  2. For the youngsters out there. that was Bess Myerson hawking the Frigidaire refrigerator of the day. She was a Miss America in 1945 and parlayed that win into a long career of television advertising and personality. From those days I also remember the woman who pitched another appliance manufacturer, Betty Furness who still fills my ears with "You can be sure if it's Westinghouse."
Anyone, what were the circular objects being manufactured with such precision? I marvel at the mind of man that creates those marvelous machines that turn out things like that.

    1. That was a large spherical roller bearing. They can be up to 26 feet in diameter and weigh up to 40 tons for use in tunnel boring machines for subways and maintenance tunnels.

    2. Fun fact: Bess Myerson was the first Jewish woman to win the Miss America crown. (And at a time that anti-semitic sentiment was rampant in the USA, especially its upper crust -- despite it being a hallmark of the foreign enemy the Allies led by the US had just defeated, or was about to. See the 1947 film Gentleman's Agreement and its controversial awards ... a fine film about prejudice against Jews that deserved the Oscars it got, but that kind of recognition sure wasn't universally popular!)

  5. I've seen the segment about the octopus before. It's quite something to hear about and amazing the mother can go on for so long.
