ReplyDeleteThe New York Central poster is prophetic with the diesel locomotive among the steam locomotives. Steam locomotives were very costly to maintain and operate due to their complexities. Diesel locomotives on the other hand were far easier to maintain and were more efficient, earning in¢ome and profit$ out on the tracks. :) While steam locomotives spent a lot of time in the repair yards costing railroads a mint. :(
ReplyDeleteAn example is Argentina. For a long time their railroads were owned by British interests, interests who insisted they keep steam locomotives that had to use worn out steam locomotives and expensive and at times unreliable British made equipment. They also had to use British coal at inflated prices, since these same interests had big shares in Britain’s coal mining industry. (Argentina has no coal) Also, the British owners did not do much in repairing and updating the railroads in Argentina so to keep as much money for shareholder profit$. As everyone should know, if you don’t put money back into your business, you go out of business !
All this had a detrimental effect on Argentina’s economy, and in 1947 the British owned railroads were nationalized. Shortly thereafter Argentina purchased their first diesel locomotives from the USA and invested money back into their railroads. -Rj
Rj - You are a wonderment of information.
ReplyDeleteTIL that in addition to gravy powder (it still exists and some of the ingredients lists are gross) there is shortening powder.
