We fake it because we don't want to keep dragging everyone else down. I remember telling an old friend of many years "I thought about suicide every day for twenty years.. it wears you down..." and her jaw dropped... she had no idea.. THAT'S how good-at-it we are..... Twenty years. Every day.
Uncle Vic - Every day here, too. Even multiple times an hour. A few years ago I was able to switch it from "thoughts of suicide" to "wishing I were dead", instead. Quite a difference in my mind. Even that wears me down. A lot.
Last one is certainly true. And a person can fake it well enough that no one realizes anything is wrong until it's too late.
ReplyDeletelove penultimate!
ReplyDeleteLike in the "CouĂ©" method: you're supposed to feel better just by telling yourself and pretending that you're fine. It can be very effective, believe me. Only, after years of using it a bad turn of professional event knocked me down as if each and every difficulty I had so easily discarded for years had stumbled back upon me in a massive - and quite destructive way. We all have our limits as to what we can endure. I have long learned to try and see past the « I’m fine » attitude in people, especially those who repeatedly pretend so.
ReplyDeleteLaurent - It's also known as "fake it 'til you make it".

ReplyDeleteIf you were dead, who would make me vote? You're more important than you know.
ReplyDeleteUncle Vic - Aw, you're important, too!
