  1. The Houston "Chronicle" recently reported on the NRA Convention in Houston. A "shadow convention" in the hotel, away from the normal convention. Where large donors and gun OEM reps hung out. Seems the NRA has become more concerned about ensuring that guns are sold, lots of guns, rather than gun safety per se. Every time they mention "They are going to come for your guns", or similar, gun sales spike. Which explains the NRA as a sales rep rather than otherwise, for the gun makers. Of course, using the 2nd Amendment as their backdrop of justifications of gun ownership.

Trump's "wall" is a rallying point for conservatives, but was a general waste of money for a lot of show. Better means than keeping people out than a physical barrier which can be tunneled under, climbed, or degraded, but none of the other electronic monitoring methods make "a show".

Gov Abbott's "Operation Lone Star" is one of his key (alleged) accomplishments. BUT it has had many issues with troop morale, troop financial ruin from leaving their jobs as National Guard members, and many suicides included. Yet he seems to ignore these things, getting new commanders and such. I suspect that for less money, he oculd have built some West TX towns for the migrants to live in as they are processed, treating them as welcoming new members of our expanding economy, on their way to going elsewhere to become taxpayers and consumers. But that's not the way paranoid Republicans do things. Although historic places like Thurber, TX was a "factory town", surrounded by a tall fence, back in its booming days of "early coal".
