2022.0621.0001...

I first read about this at Big Whack Attack, who read it at All Natural & More. This is extremely upsetting and should be a wake-up call for every American. Nazis did not rise to power overnight, and once they had control, they chipped away at citizens' rights until, well, you know. We should never forget what happened! "It Can't Happen Here" is already happening...

New Texas GOP Platform Declares Homosexuality 'Abnormal Lifestyle Choice'

It also opposes "all efforts to validate transgender identity," and supports "Reintegrative Therapy" to eliminate "unwanted same-sex attraction."

Report of the Permanent 2022 Platform & Resolutions Committee

Homosexuality: Homosexuality is an abnormal lifestyle choice. We believe there should be no granting of special legal entitlements or creation of special status for homosexual behavior, regardless of state of origin, and we oppose any criminal or civil penalties against those who oppose homosexuality out of faith, conviction, or belief in traditional values. No one should be granted special legal status based on their LGBTQ+ identification.

I was surprised that NPR did not mention the resolution against gays. Click on link...

So, one of the TX Republican committee members is an out gay man. He says he argued against the anti-gay stuff but ultimately lost (obviously).

The question I'd like to ask him: Are you remaining a member of the GOP?

If his answer is "Yes." then he deserves to be "canceled" just as much as any Karen. His friends should be saying, "Bye, Felicia!"

You nailed it, Rick, thanks for your research and efforts. This is the definitive example of pure evil and hatred. Major corporations headquartered and doing business in Texas need to step up now and take a BIG LOUD stand on this disgusting display and do what they can with their clout to end this debacle. Unless, of course, they are in agreement with that platform. Then I want to know which companies they are and my boycott begins. I have never patronized Chick-fil-a or whatever the fuck it's called and they've been in town for 3 years.

I don't follow NPR, but this surprises me too. Pretty much every story I've seen about the proposed platform has prominently mentioned the "Homosexuality is an abnormal lifestyle choice" denunciation.

It's a bit baffling what they are exactly calling for. I'm pretty sure no "special legal entitlements or special status for homosexual behavior" exist or have ever been proposed by anyone. For example, same-sex couples are allowed to get married exactly the way opposite-sex couples are; it's not a special entitlement or status, just the same entitlement everyone else has. Nor are there any "criminal or civil penalties against those who oppose homosexuality". Lots of people say anti-gay things all the time and I've never heard of anyone being charged with a crime for it in the US. As for saying homosexuality is abnormal, they're entitled to their opinion, but name-calling doesn't have any legal force. Supporting conversion therapy is like supporting astrology or voodoo. Whether they approve or disapprove of it, by all evidence it doesn't work.

Strictly speaking the platform calls for a referendum on secession, not for secession itself, but since secession is illegal, any such referendum would have no legal effect. As for declaring that Biden's victory was illegitimate, they're free to declare that 2+2=5 or that the Sun rises in the west if they feel like it.

Once you get past the overall outrageousness of this, it's just an exercise in telling the most hardcore wingnuts "we hate the same things you do". Rather than freaking out (which is what the wingnuts want), Democrats should point out that it doesn't propose anything to solve even a single problem, and is just performative grandstanding.

Rad - I'm hoping against hope that the Giant Floating Orange Turd and his minions finally get indicted, but I'm not holding my breath. Heads need to roll for this "movement" to be stopped. Did I mention that I'm not holding my breath? Ron DeSantis seems "normal" to them but hates all the same things the haters hate. And yes, heat brings them out in droves.

Pat - "Bye, Felicia!" - I love it!

Milleson - Unfortunately, corporations are capitalists and they feed out of whichever party's trough will give them what they want. Isn't that kind of quid pro quo?

Infidel - Maybe NPR doesn't think proposing to take away equal rights is that important. I dunno. I hope you are right that it's just an exercise in performance grandstanding. But their crap appeals to way too many.

It'll be performance grandstanding until it makes its to the Supreme Court. Then it'll be just like Roe v Wade: Too late to stop it.

Rick, I heard a report on NPR yesterday, This American Life with Ari Shapiro interviewing a reporter from a Texas newspaper and they did talk about the homosexuality issue.

Pat - And, we know how impartial the SCOTUS is these days.

Anon@4:03pm - Good to know. I wonder why they didn't mention it in the written article.

Truly? Texas should probably be picked up and transported to Russia. There, among homophobic people, those people could not get better.

Oops! I named the wrong show. It was on All Things Considered. It’s the first thing Ari mentions.

Texas is scaring me to death... What a repugnant state of affairs. Abbott and all those ignorant S.O.B's need to be run out of town on a rail. How, in this day and age, does something like this happen?
