The pre-cursor to the 747??
ReplyDeleteI've posted this one sometimes on my blog « https://distresscalls.tumblr.com/https://distresscalls.tumblr.com/ ».
ReplyDeleteIt's a Boeing B-377 maybe one of the last prop engine airliner for civilians trips.
Planes are one of my favorite stuff to know about.
Pat - I have no idea.
ReplyDeleteJiEL - Unfortunately, the link did not show anything.
You have to go in my «archive» and look for the posts I did on this one.
ReplyDeleteGoogle images of the Stratocruiser's service for Northwest (Orient) Airlines! It carried many people to and from Japan...it was amazing!
ReplyDelete--E in NW Ohio
This was a thing? Back when airlines placed customer comfort over profit.
ReplyDeleteJiEL - You certainly have a lot of stuff in your archives, but I need more specific info on when you posted that.
ReplyDeleteE - Yes, very neat!
I know I do post a lot..

JiEL - Thanks for the complete link! Nice!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the Stratocruiser's supercharged engines were notoriously unreliable. She was nicknamed "The best three-engine airliner over the Atlantic".
ReplyDeleteAnon@5:33pm - That is very funny - NOT! Too scary.
ReplyDeleteThe Boeing Stratocruiser had problems with their air-cooled engines and their propeller blades. The rear pistons of their Wasp radial engines did not receive enough cooling air and would seize, causing engine shutdowns.
ReplyDeleteThis caused 2 fatal crashes. The propeller pitch mechanisms and blade design also caused 2 fatal crashes. And one tragic incident when a woman passenger was sucked out a of window over the Amazon.
In 1956 a Pan Am Stratocruiser had to ditch in the Pacific Ocean N/E of Hawaii due to propeller overspeed (the blade tips can reach hypersonic speeds).
You can see the incident and rescue on You Tube, everyone survived. -Rj
RJ - Whew, I'm glad everyone survived! Thanks for all of that info.
