Portland is big on chickens.

  1. Across the Columbia, people can raise chickens, mostly caged but some free range. A family on the other side of my backyard fence have both chickens and ducks, one chicken in particular is very vocal during the day. I love watching them because from time to time they fly up on top of the fence, three different breeds, very colorful feathers. So far they haven't flown down into my yard, but if that happens, there will be fried chicken for dinner!!! If I don't take care of them I'm sure one of the many hawks in the area will decrease the flock. Aah, nature!

  2. A few chickens are cool pets to have your garden (and on your T-shirt too :-)
I had some during the few years I lived in the countryside. They are fun to watch walking through the garden in search for anything that's edible, can easily get along with your cat and/or your dog once they all understand they share the same territory, they love help you get rid of any kitchen waste and will reward you with fresh eggs, and they come in a variety of size and feathering. The only downside is that you will have to keep them from your lovely mixed borders or they will quickly make a mess of them, though the worst at that are the peacocks - yes I had some of those too, they are splendid but stupid and sometimes even aggressive.

  3. Milleson - Aw, you don't mean that about the fried chicken. I'm sure you'd go say hello and maybe pet it, if it will let you. And a duck! What fun. A few blocks from home there's a free range chicken that wanders into the street and I worry that it will get killed someday.

BatRedneck - Wow, you had a peacock! I've heard stories about them being stupid and sometimes aggressive.

  4. Here in the UK as I am sure it is the same in many areas of the world, peacocks we’re used as ‘burglar alarms’ as they ‘screaming call’ is a warning of something approaching, they don’t half make a mess if your garden though, basically a posh pheasant!

  6. We have several folks in the neighborhood with a henhouse. The roosters are a joy to hear.
