On a sunny day, the top of the Eiffel Tower slowly drifts in a small circle about six inches wide
On a clear afternoon in Paris, the very top of the Eiffel Tower, 330 metres above the ground, is not exactly where it was at sunrise. It has moved a few centimetres to the west. By midday it has moved a few more centimetres to the south. By late afternoon it is several centimetres east of where it began. By the time the sun sets and the iron cools back to the surrounding air temperature, the top of the tower returns to its starting position. Over the course of a sunny day, the summit traces a slow, irregular curve roughly 15 centimetres in diameter, or just under six inches. The cause is not wind. Wind makes the tower sway and shudder on its own faster timescale. The cause of the slow daily circle is the sun.

Who says gay porn sites are all about sex and filth? Yes, there's that, but we get some enlightenment along the way. Who knew, and more importantly, how'd they find out about this phenomenon?
ReplyDeleteI've been on the top of the Eiffel tour on May 1989 and must admit that this structure is very stable and I never feel any moves. For sur it's moving but as said here it's a long time move.
ReplyDeleteEvery structures will move for many reasons and like in new skyscrapers they put devices on the top to conter balance those to preserve the integrity of the structure.
Bridges have expansion joints to keep them safe no matter the temperature.
Same for the train rails. In France and Europe with the extreme hot temperatures they're having this summer, many trains couldn't run because the rails are too much deforming and are no more safe to go on.
JiEL - That's very interesting - and unfortunate - about the train rails.
DeleteThis is a big issue as in Europe trains can get you anywhere and are very reliable. With these unusual high temperature the train service is largely impacted and causes pain for people to commute or go on trips.
DeleteLe génie de Gustave Eiffel,
ReplyDeleteet sa tour sont toujours là. :)
En France et en Europe, les êtes sont de plus en plus chauds d’année en année :
un signal d’alarme de la nature à l’humanité !
-Beau Mec à Deauville
Beau Mec - A call that people in power are not listening to.
DeleteI've always found the design of the Eiffel tower funny and interesting to look at, for its proportions - although not based on the golden ratio - are remarkable. And what it might lack - at least to some - in terms of 'beauty' is in my opinion more than compensated by the genius of ingeenering that made it totally unique back int those times. I'm glad it was not disassembled, as initially projected and wanted by many detractors.
