Spomeniks
Spomenik is the Serbo-Croatian/Slovenian word for "monument" or "memorial". It commonly refers to the abstract, futuristic, and brutalist monuments built in Yugoslavia during the 1960s-70s to commemorate WWII anti-fascist struggles. Commissioned by Josip Broz Tito, these concrete, futuristic structures are scattered across the Balkans - including Serbia, Croatia, and Bosnia - often featuring otherworldly, geometric designs that depart from traditional socialist realism. These sites, designed to promote unity, were often abandoned or destroyed in the 1990s but are now recognized for their artistic value.
