Myrtle Corbin, 1882

  1. Myrtle Corbin was a fascinating woman who - surprisingly for sideshow performers - didn't have a tragic ending like so many of them did. She got out of the sideshow business fairly early in life, met and married her lifelong husband and had several normal, healthy children. She lived a good, full life finally passing away in the late 1920's or early 1930's and was by all accounts considered a woman of good taste and virtue if I remember correctly.

Years ago I purchased a book called "American Sideshow: An Encyclopedia of History's Most Wondrous and Curiously Strange Performers" which provided biographies and profiles of several sideshow performers along with photographs, circus bills, etc. I was impressed that the author kept a fairly objective viewpoint of the subject, producing a neutral stance that side-stepped the usual "poor little things" perspective or celebrating their uniqueness.

The book provides a great peek into the world of the individuals behind the sideshow craze and propaganda and allows you to view them as real human beings other than oddities; find a copy of it if you can!

    Thanks Rick!
