ReplyDeleteShwedagon pagoda, the famed golden pagoda of Yangon Myanmar/Rangoon Burma. I visited in 2011 when they encouraged tourism. So much to see in that country with its golden pagodas, temples, wooden monasteries and ornate palaces at Mandalay, Amarapura, Bagan, Innwa and Mingun. As well as Inle Lake with its festival of golden temple like boats. Easy to access as they are in the central part of Myanmar near Mandalay. Near Yangon, Bago is a historic town with the famed reclining Buddha. Mrauk-U and its ancient temples are to the west coast near India. Incredible sight to see when they’re enveloped by fog. Not to mention the natural beauty of the country and its friendly people and tasty cuisine, a cross between Thai, Chinese and Indian foods.
I was fortunate to visit when Myanmar had opened up, as the country had been closed to foreign tourists between 1962 and 1990. In the 1990’s tourist were restricted to guided tours only and gradually through the years allowed more freedom to travel within the country. Since the 2021 military coup tourism is iffy at best.
