It's certainly a masterpiece of enginering.
ReplyDeleteBut as one of my friend from France, Franck (EstaNoche) he is against that bridge as he said it massacred the peacful landscape of this region.
For sure it doesn't get anyone without some reactions, positive or negative.
What a magnificent feat of architectural and engineering excellence, and striking photography. Completed in 2005 at a cost of $377 million. Hmmmmm. Makes this Pacific Northwestern wonder why the ill-fated Columbia River Crossing project was scheduled to cost between $3.1 and $10 billion. That's billion with a capital B. Can you say graft and corruption? Seems impossible to trust anything like this anymore.
ReplyDeleteJiEL - I'm sure reactions were very intense on both sides.
ReplyDeleteMilleson - Yeah, what's up with that? Simply terrible! Nothing will get done until the crossing falls into the river after a "big one" earthquake.
That is a amazing. So well designed and innovative. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great design. It doesn't obliterate the view as some can.
ReplyDeleteI had the opportunity to use this viaduct a couple of years ago and the experience is as beautiful and impressive as the pictures show. Prior to that, I too was concerned this bridge was kind of degrading the beauty of the whole landscape, when in fact it is not, for it measures to it. And after all I think it is no more misplaced in a natural scenery than the Roman aqueducts that are praised for their antique architecture.
ReplyDeleteOn our way back from the Mediterranean coast my brother and I chose to make a stop in the little town of Millau which is charming and quite typical - and way less disturbed and polluted by traffic than it was prior to the viaduct's opening.
Laurent - Was driving across the viaduct scary? I see there are very good guardrails but I would still be scared. I think it's a beautiful feat of engineering.
ReplyDeleteI'm duly impressed but, with my intense vertigo, I'd be inclined to take the less scenic route.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rick.
Jimbo - That village looks like a nice place.
ReplyDeleteYes, and - happily - low to the ground! 8D
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings about this viaduct. It is beautiful, but it feels wrong somehow. What do i know?
ReplyDeleteRichard - You know that it feels wrong, and that's okay.
