While wasting time "surfing", I ran across this picture of my hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska, with its tall and glowing capitol building, affectionately referred to as "The Penis of the Plains" by the locals. Toward the middle of the image is a church that I recalled was used in a movie, but I couldn't remember the name of the movie. After a little Googling I had my answer...
Terms of Endearment, 1983
The most successful film made in Nebraska, “Terms of Endearment” was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won five -- best picture; best director; best screenwriting for James L. Brooks; best actress for Shirley MacLaine; and best supporting actor for Jack Nicholson. The story of conflict between mother MacLaine and daughter, played by Debra Winger, was shot on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, at Lincoln General Hospital (now Bryan West Campus); the Holiday Inn Northeast (now GuestHouse Inn); the now-defunct Kay’s Restaurant; the Lincoln Municipal Airport; St. Mary’s Catholic Church; and at a house that since has been demolished.
Another famous movie with a Lincoln, Nebraska connection is...
Boys Don't Cry
The 1999 film "Boys Don't Cry" also had scenes taking place in Nebraska, though the film was shot in Texas. Hilary Swank won an Oscar for her portrayal of the real life Brandon Teena. Teena, a Lincoln native, was a woman posing as a man and was raped and murdered in Humboldt, Neb., in 1993.
Clicking either movie title will take you to more information about other movies made in Nebraska. Unfortunately, reading beyond the first page of the "Endearment" link requires a subscription. The "Boys" link is just one page and lists other movies.
ADORE Terms of Endearment. Had no idea it was made in Lincoln, NB. Such an iconic movie... a product of its times. I tried to sit through the sequel once... it was dreadful, so quit at the mid-point.

It seems that the Lincoln Journal Star is quite protective of what they publish. Not the best way to advertise Nebraska, though :-(

BOTH films were amazing.
ReplyDeleteThe nicest thing I can say about terms of endearment is 'mawkish'.
ReplyDeleteI'm a Lincoln boy, when did you live here?
I lived there until 1976 when I got the hell away. A great place to grow up straight, but not gay.
