When I was a youngun, our house was poorly insulated that during the winter, when winters were harsh in the PNW, the roof snow would melt rapidly and form 8 foot icicles that would pierce the 4 feet of snow in the yard.
Milleson - The neighbor to our west has a dormer on their roof that develops an icicle similar to that.
