One of my uncles owned a 1959 station wagon Chevrolet like that one. Remembering my two cousins, my brother and me on a long trip in the back of that station wagon. No seat belts were in law then in 1960. My mother, my aunt and sister seated in the back seat and my uncle driving with my dad in the front seat.
NO seat belts for a 400 miles trip.
Some think these fins had no purpose outside esthetics, but I always thought they were kind of a message to those driving behind these cars, like in 'I can see you, so don't mess with me'.
(and now here I am browsing sites about cars when I've never, ever been a car guy - sigh)
JiEL - It's a wonder we survived the 50s.
BatRedneck - You still appreciate them.
Two years after I was born. Sigh, it would be nice to have cars that had character.
Unknown@4:35pm - Oh, I don't know. I think today's cars have character. Just different character, that's all.
The stylists became liberal in the conservative 1950's - wrap around windshields, tail fins, scalloped fender lines, chrome galore.
Then went conservative in the liberal 60's - slab sided, restrained boxes.
