I truly believe that the last great architectural movement of the 20th century was Mid-Century Modern (MCM). While I can appreciate the aesthetic beauty of more modern architecture, other than very few exceptions I find it to be cold, unfeeling and dead. It just doesn't speak to the soul or just beckon you to come live or work in it. Instead, by reducing itself down to absolute minimalist proportions and function by removing artistry and the true creative talent that was showcased so prominently in other styles, it has become nothing but a dense mass of materials.
ReplyDeleteI think part of the loss of warmth are those materials themselves - where before, buildings were wood, plaster and stone that breathed and proudly proclaimed/featured their heritage of "natural," now we have been reduced to concrete and "fake" materials such as Hardi board, plastic and vinyl. These new materials simply don't breathe or feature true artisan talent like earlier styles such as Victorian, Craftsman, Art Nouveau/Deco, Streamlined Moderne and yes - even MCM. I'll stick with my Victorian where true craftsmanship and effort shine through.
