Of all the castles that my family visited when we lived in Germany, Neuschwanstein was my very favorite (we went three times). It truly is the epitome of dream crafted into reality. Those visits were one of the few happy memories from my childhood that I cherish.
It's a shame that King Ludwig II died (was murdered?) so early in his life; I realize that he wasn't the best monarch to govern the Bavarian people, but he certainly had style and taste when he did it! 😁 His bed alone took artisans four years to finish carving, while the only thing that kept the castle from being "finished" was the fact that no throne was ever put on the dais in the Throne Room. Finished or not, it certainly outshines Hohenschwangau which is at the base of the mountain and was his father's castle.
Eine grandiose Folly, die ein Vermögen kostete und Bayern beinahe in den Bankrott trieb; heute ist sie ein Symbol Bayerns und ein Geldbringer. :) Ein weiteres Schloss, das die Wittelsbacher erbauten, war Palast Herrenchiemsee, das Versailles Bayerns. Die Familie Wittelsbach waren ausgesprochene Kritiker Hitlers und litten darunter. (vvs)
