  1. I do like the wraparound porch of 551.

  2. As usual in these early designs, the kitchens are smaller than the dining rooms, but in addition, these kitchens are bare, with just a sink, no shelves, no cupboards. The 2nd and 3rd plans have a china cupboard in the dining room – presumably for showing off the good china. Instead of kitchen cupboards, each plan has a pantry with shelves. And in the 3rd and 4th plans, the kitchen and dining room are not even directly connected – you have to go through the pantry. Strange.

  3. Can you imagine all the people who bought these plans and just hoped and saved and dreamed? That's the American dream. And today? It's a real dream. Like... you can dream all you want, but good luck affording any of these houses.

  4. I just noticed another strange thing. In the 2nd plan, the downstairs bedroom has a wide opening into the dining room with no door, putting anyone in that bedroom on display with no privacy and making the door into the hallway superfluous.
