U.S. cavalry soldiers pose in front of a sequoia in Yosemite known as "Grizzly Giant," in 1900...
As of February 2024, the Grizzly Giant is still standing in Yosemite National Park's Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. The tree is estimated to be 2,995 years old, plus or minus 250 years, making it one of the largest and oldest living trees in the world. The Grizzly Giant is 209 feet tall and 29 feet in diameter, and is located along the Grizzly Giant and Mariposa Grove Trails. The 2-mile Grizzly Giant Trail takes about 90 minutes to complete and starts and ends at the Mariposa Grove Arrival Area. In July 2022, the Washburn Fire threatened the Grizzly Giant and other trees in the grove, but the National Park Service used sprinklers to protect the tree.

Wow... what great photos. Historic!
ReplyDeleteIn 1968 we got to drive through the famous Wawano tree at Yosemite before it collapsed that winter. Luckily, the Redwood Shrine drive through tree is still around.
ReplyDeleteBe mindful that a majestic Sequoia can fall over at anytime, not to mention huge branches can break off without warning.
It is a rare occurrence and people have been killed, be careful and observant at all times in State and National Parks.
