  3. The complaints were real. We didn't make as much then, so those prices were high in comparison to income which was $4,400 in 1955, or about 6 percent higher than in 1954,

  5. Today those prices seem so low but as taurus said we have to see the relative income in those days too.

But nothing didn't change after all and the price of living today is higher and again, a family has to see both of the spouses to work to buckle the end of the month even here in Canada.

Depending of you income, we have income taxes (federal and provincial) around 15% for a roughly $40 000/year.
But we have many social programs to help us as our famous universal health care system and also a universal prescriptions care too.

  6. These are great!! Thanks for posting.

    A few observations:

*Notice how small the shopping carts were.

*Women having to work. Women of yesteryear would turn in their graves. Remember when the husband brought home the bacon and that was enough to buy a home, support a family, go on a yearly vacation... What would you say if pay caught up with the cost of living and a one-income family is all that is needed to live comfortably? Of course, women could work if they wanted to and their pay was an added extra and not a necessity. Just think how the US would be? Kids would be better off. And yes we would still have a few children that are crazy as hell just less of them.

*I worked in a McDonald's just like the picture in Rancho Cordova, CA around 1975. My father would not give me money for a class ring so I worked at McDonalds. I quit after I saved enough money to purchase the ring. That was when quality fast food was a thing. Just don't ask me about the OSHA violations.
