Is this real? It doesn't look like it has a handy oriface to put what it grabs or the heft to do something with it once it grabs it.

And as usuals the first reaction from "some U.S. officials" is paranoia. Quick, more funds need to be assigned to the military to assess the threat and counteract it!
As if the armies around the world were not already running such programs, starting with the U.S. army thanks to Reagan.
As for me I'm glad to see that scientists at worldwide space agencies are working on the actual issue at hand: handling the disposal of all the trash that was sent up there. I do hope they get the means to impose private agencies to also pay for it...

Thanks for the link, Rick. It provides a bit of hope.

Laurent - I'm guessing this will go the way of all the plastic in the oceans: Too little too late.

The difference with these orbital debris may be that when they will start to pose a threat to satellites - both military and private company ones - in the way that they'll be taken down at an alarming ratio by these debris, then suddenly those very-smart-and-important-people will agree on a quick and effective solution, and the money will flow. To please their egos they'll set up conferences and summits, stating through big formal speeches how clever they were to come up with this and that, and how generous they are to fund the whole thing. When in reality they will just finally fund whatever science is already trying to address and at the height of the problem they’re responsible for in the first place...
These people are so predictable it's almost tiring.

Laurent - The tiring part to me is that after all their blah blah blah, the problem will not get solved.
