From a European point of view, for what it's worth, electing a former second-class movie actor to be the ruler of what - at that time - was the leading western country... Not only did it weaken the way all the other countries saw the U.S., it also allowed a mindless cowboy to set rules to what Republicans since became.
When some seem to think of the 80s as a 'happy era', I think of Mitterrand, Thatcher, Reagan, and I am definitely not happy with what they left us all to deal with.
