Foto 3- Braunkohlebagger Brown coal/ Lignite excavator In the DDR lignite was a main source of fuel for power generation. Lignite has a low caloric content compared to bituminous and anthracite coal. Anthracite coal is the best as it burns the cleanest and producers the most power per ton. Lignite not so much as it burns the dirtiest and produces a lot less power per ton. In the 1960 DDR- Poland film “The Silent Star/First Spaceship on Venus” you can see a lignite excavator in action at the beginning of the film. (vvs)
