It might have taken a few centuries if the rate of fossil fuel consumption had remained at the same level as 1912. For example, oil consumption was negligible in 1912; almost all of it has taken place since then. Also, world population in 1912 was about 1.8 billion; it recently passed 8 billion. In my opinion, population growth is at the root of all major problems on Earth, including global warming.
And it didn't even take centuries....
